History of Hip Hop Comics 2005, Comics I have always been a fan of hip hop, and when I became a music teacher at a local junior high, I felt it was my responsibility to understand the history more deeply. I researched the roots of hip hop and made these comics for my students, since I wanted to share the excitement I felt from learning about the historical/ cultural vein that pumps our ears with music.
Bay Area African-American History Stickers 2005, Stickers I made these stickers for my junior high students and for the West Oakland Farmer's Market, during their celebration of Black History Month. There are so many amazing, inspiring African-Americans in the Bay Area- I really need to do more of these!
Fast 4 Education Stickers 2004, Stickers In 2004, the Contra Costa School District had somehow racked up a huge bill with the state, and the state was forcing the school district to pay back the money. The poorly-funded schools were going to have to close down. Teachers, students and other activists decided to fast as a form of protest, in the spirit of Cesar Chavez.
Tea Gangsta' 2004, Ad Campaign I made these advertisements to sell tea, at a time when I was growing and mixing my own tea to help me overcome an ongoing illness. These ads make fun of the way that the media constructs and perpetuates an amalgamate "hip hop-gangsta'" lifestyle. My Tea Gangsta' ads are ironic because usually herbal tea is marketed as a white, hippie, motherly, poetic lifestyle item. I don't relate to either the hard gangsta' thang or the soft au naturale thingy.
Photo Journal of West Oakland 2004, Photographs West Oakland is a beautiful corner of the Bay Area with a dense history. This is a collection of photos from the streets, gardens, chicken killings, basketball courts, Canadian geese and fire hydrant sprinkler sessions.
City Slicker Farms 2004, Flyers and Herbs I worked off-and-on at City Slicker Farms in Oakland for almost two years. I cultivated herbs, taught workshops, helped organize/ develop the workshop program and designed flyers.
Focus 360 2001, Architectural Renderings Focus 360 is an architectural rendering house where I made fake renditions of architectural spaces using Photoshop. I would build elevations starting with nothing but a CAD drawing (looks like a coloring book drawing) and fake everything out with filters, shading, adding photos of plant, car, people, etc.
